NARA recovered a ‘Submerged Ocean Observation Mooring’ on 22-12-2020

National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) recovered a ‘Submerged Ocean Observation Mooring’ on 22-12-2020 with the assistance of Sri Lanka Navy. This is the first ever indigenous recovery of offshore mooring, conducted by National Institute of Oceanographic Marine Sciences (NIOMS) staff. The mooring was deployed off Dondra at a depth of 500 m with a surface recovery buoy, submerged at a depth of 85 m, to avoid any disturbance to the navigation and fishing.  The mooring attached with a series of salinity and temperature sensors and current meter was remotely released from the anchor by a remote controlled device.  The year-long measurements are expected to give an insight into the water exchange between the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal via the southern coast of Sri Lanka in respect to the reversing ocean currents.
