Container ship MV X-PRESS PEARL incident

Container ship MV X-PRESS PEARL arrived with 1486 containers on board, loaded among other goods, with nitric acid, ethanol, other chemicals, cosmetics and plastic Nurdles caught fire in the off the coast of Northwest of Colombo Port on May 20th, 2021, causing damages to the marine environment and aquatic resources.  NARA has taken immediate action to investigate the situation and assess the environmental damage.  Resulting from the accelerated fire incident significant ecological damage is observed in the local environment, especially in the vicinity of the site of the incident and the western coast. Further, a full-scale investigation was carried out in the coastal stretch from Mount Lavinia to Wennappuwa, including the Negombo lagoon area. According to the survey, damage is identified at 9.5 nautical miles northwest of Colombo Port. Moreover, identifying debris of the ship is being carried out to identify the future potential damages. NARA Research Vessel “Samuddrika”, functioned by Sri Lanka Navy, is being operated in the survey.
