The Northern Province of Sri Lanka stands as one of the country’s most dynamic and productive fisheries regions. Blessed with an extensive coastline, rich fishing grounds, productive Lagoons, and vast untapped potential for sustainable aquaculture, the region occupies a strategically critical maritime position in the Palk Bay. Its proximity to major inland, coastal, and marine ecosystems alongside ecologically sensitive habitats endows the North with exceptional strategic, economic, ecological, and socio-cultural importance. Recognizing the vast, untapped potential to develop fisheries and sustainable aquaculture in these waters, NARA addressed this critical gap by establishing its newest regional facility, The Regional Research Centre, Jaffna, in Poonakary, on April 5, 2024. By bridging the gap between scientific innovation and community-level implementation, the Regional Research Centre, Jaffna ensures that resource utilization in the north remains ecologically sustainable, socio-economically impactful, and fully aligned with national strategic priorities
