Socio-Economic & Marketing Division – About Us

The Main functions of the Division include Social and Economic studies in the fishing industry, including the welfare of fishermen and their dependants, analysis of different fish distribution patterns and its impact on consumers

Established in 1997, the Socio-economic and Marketing Research Division (SEMD) provides a platform for innovative insights and solutions bearing on a wide variety of socio-economic and marketing issues in the fisheries and related industries, with the goal of enhancing social and economic opportunities and improving quality of life of all stakeholders.

In addition to research work in the above areas, the SEMD produces the annual Fisheries Year Book, which is the official publication on Sri Lankan fisheries statistics.
