Background of World Hydrography Day

In 2005 ,the General Assembly of the United Nation ( adoption resolution A/60/30 on oceans and law of the sea which in particular welcomed the adoption by the IHO of the World Hydrography Day, with the aim of giving suitable publicity to its work at all levels and of increasing the coverage of  hydrographic information on a global basis. The resolution urged all states to work with the IHO to promote safe navigation, especially in the areas of international navigation, ports, and vulnerable or protected marine areas. As a result, on the  21st of June each year the IHO celebrates World Hydrography Day. World Hydrography Day is an opportunity to increase public awareness of the vital role that hydrography plays in everyone’s lives. (Source: IHO web site)

Theme for 2019

The IHO has chosen as its theme for World Hydrography Day 2019:

“Hydrographic Information Driving Marine Knowledge”

Celebration World Hydrography Day 2019 by Sri Lanka

National Hydrographic Office of National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) Sri Lanka celebrated the day with school children who are the members of Aqua Club of schools and the distinguished guests from NARA. As IHO emphasize, bearing the aim, giving suitable publicity to hydrographic works, NHO has chosen to transfer knowledge to the younger generation who are keen to explore the ocean.

In this event Eng. W.N.M.Zoysa, Director General, NARA graced the seminar as Chief Guest. He highlighted the importance of hydrography to the nation and the importance of giving knowledge to the young generation. Mr.S.R.C.Ranaweera, Actg.Chief Hydrographer delivered the keynote address.

The seminar was included three presentations on “What is Hydrography and Why we need Hydrography”, Law of the Sea and Maritime Zones and Modern technology and Future of Hydrography”. Finally, Cartographers conducted an activity on “Map reading and Cartography”. A display was also arranged with hydrographic products and various survey equipment.
